Sunken Cages is the moniker for Ravish Momin, an Indian-born
drummer, electronic music producer and educator. For the past
decade, Momin has been experimenting with enhancing his acoustic
drum sounds with electronic ones, and has crafted a unique electro-
acoustic approach. He triggers sounds and textures, layers live-
loops and manipulates them ‘on the fly’, to blur the lines between
composition and improvisation. While rooted in Indian folk and Black
Music traditions, Sunken Cages is also influenced by the street
sounds of South African G’com, Angolan Kuduro and Egyptian
Mahraganat.

Song for The Zanzi is a homage to the Zanzi people of India. The Zanzi or the Siddis, as they are now known, are believed to have descended from the Bantu people of the East African region who first came to India in 628 A.D. They were merchants, sailors, mercenaries, and some even rose to political power within Indian territories. It was the first known instance of Africans ruling and thriving in another land. Unfortunately, the Siddis have had their histories erased and they have been marginalized over time. They are not considered a part of mainstream society any longer. Their population is currently estimated to be around 350,000, mainly in the states of Karnataka, Gujurat, and Andhra Pradesh in India, and Makran and Karachi in Pakistan. Siddis are primarily Muslim, although some do belong to other religions as well.
As the Black Lives Matter movement rightfully gains prominence in the world, it’s important to address the anti-blackness that is embedded in other cultures as well.
On this recording, Momin augments his electronic setup with a wide arsenal of acoustic instruments that include the Gusli (Russian dulcimer), Oud, Tibetan cloud chimes, doumbek, claypot drum and cajon along with Sufi and Hindu ritual chants.Dir Travis Williams

I can't speak to the lyrics, but I really like this manifestation of electronic lounge music and North African drums and vocals.
It's good late night chill music, not downtempo but energetic in a laid back way musically. Gaelan D'costa
Influenced by post-dubstep, lo-fi house, and trip-hop, 1five1’s sound draws from iconic outfits like Portishead, even as she completely pushes her own distinctive beats and textures into sophisticated spaces beyond those original inspirations. Bandcamp Album of the Day Dec 13, 2018
